Two weeks of training down...

Roughly another eight weeks of training to go:-)

Today, I bought my first foam roller. For my non-racing friends (notice, I didn't say non-running friends), a foam roller is what can best be described as the 21st century equivalent of a medieval torture device. I didn't think this at first. I was doing fine until I reached the part of the instructional DVD that targeted my upper legs. OMG that thing HURT!!! It also makes me wonder what the hell is going on inside my upper thighs. All I can say is OWWW!!! (Okay, I said a lot more than "OWWW!", but I'm trying not to repeat that particular string of profanity in print.:-) Below is a picture of my new foam roller. It looks innocent enough, but inside that neon green cylinder of foam is a sadistic streak that would make the Maquis de Sade proud.

I'm currently training for both The Color Run 5K, and the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K with Team in Training's PLUS Team. Both races are at the end of May. One is just for fun, and the other is a fun fundraiser. If you can spare a few dollars to help me reach my $500.00 fundraising minimum, it will help support cancer patients and cancer research. A Very Busy "Spring Ahead" for 2015

  • MS Walk NY on April 19, 2015
  • AIDS Walk NY on May 17, 2015
  • The Color Run 5K on May 23, 2015 
  • An upcoming 10K with Team in Training's "TNT PLUS" team for us folks who are 50+, and, quite possibly, 
  • The Rock-n-Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon in October 2015. 
That should keep me busy for a while, don't you think?:-)

Previously, on "Crawl, Carol, CRAWL!!!"...

Previously, on "Crawl, Carol, CRAWL!!!", I was, at some point, training for the NYC Half Marathon.

That didn't happen.

Due to health issues, primarily asthma-related, my training got seriously de-railed. However, all is not lost. My doctor wrote me a note (which makes me feel like I'm in high school again), my participation deferred to another Team in Training NYC event, and the related funds that I raised were rolled over and applied to my new race...

The Oakley New York Mini 10K!

This is "the world's original women-only road race", and I am seriously considering an attempt at :::gasp::: running it. Yeah, you read that right, I said "running it". So, while my training officially begins on Saturday, April 19th and runs (there's that "R-word" again) for 8 weeks, I am starting now. Now, as in today, I ran close to half of my miles this morning. No wheezing. No shortness of breath. I did not die from over-exertion. I am still very much alive - at least alive enough to write this, anyway.

I'm also ahead on my fundraising. Ahead as in already exceeded my goal. While I most definitely plan to continue my efforts, the fact that I do not have to stress out over fundraising while training is FANTASTIC!

Somebody Up There Likes Me!

This weekend, we did a 5 mile training walk/run from Astoria Park to Roosevelt Island and back. In my case, there was no "and back", since I caught the subway back to Forest Hills for my Weight Watchers meeting, instead of walking back to Astoria Park.

Somebody up there really likes me, that's all I can say. The "Zombie Staircase" restroom was unlocked when we got there, which was perfect timing, since I was trying to figure out how I was going to make it halfway around the island to the tram restroom. We also had free pasta samples courtesy of one of the farmers market vendors, and my train was there within less than a minute of getting to the subway station. Somehow, by some miracle, I only gained .4 lbs over the holiday week. Like I said, somebody up there really likes me!
